Maryhill  v. Perthshire
2 - 2

1st August 2009

An injury time goal denied Maryhill their first win of the season.

The opening exchanges were fairly even , with headers from John Cunningham and John Craig both coming close for the home side and the visitors respectively. Perthshire went ahead in the 22nd minute when John Craig just beat Hill's trialist keeper to squeeze the ball over the line. Fraser Malcolm should have made it two four minutes later, but after good work , delayed his final shot just a fraction too long. Maryhill, playing some neat, but sporadic football, forced a series of corners, and two efforts from Ross Barr were just wide of the target. The deserved equaliser duly arrived three minutes from the break, when Andrew Wright headed powerfully home from a Michael Tolland corner.

Half Time - Maryhill 1  Perthshire 1

Nine minutes after the interval, Malcolm had another good chance for Shire, but the trialist keeper made a good save. Ryan Scobie then came very close for Hill, but his header from a Mark Sideserf cross was just inches wide. The same player had better luck a couple of minutes later, however, when he gave Maryhill the lead. Mark Sideserf's outswinging corner was headed goalwards by Ross Barr, and Scobie flicked the ball past Iain MacKay from close range. Maryhill dominated for the remainder of the game, forcing twelve corners to Shire's two, but it was the visitors who had the better chances on the break. The best opportunity fell to Brian Noble midway through the half, but his mistimed effort was blocked by the keeper. At the other end, a header from Craig Ferguson, and a volley from John Cunningham both brought out good stops from MacKay, and a good old fashioned"stramash" saw efforts from Wright, Ferguson and Scobie somehow fail to hit the target. Just as the three points were looking safe, the visitors drew level in injury time, with indecision in the Maryhill defence allowing Brian Noble to fire home a well placed shot from just outside the penalty area.
