Maryhill progressed to the
third round of the Scottish Cup with
a demolition of Forfar Albion, and
had it not been for a missed
penalty, would have reached double
figures.
Willie
Sawyers almost put Maryhill ahead in
the first minute, but his header
struck the crossbar. A few minutes
later the visitors had a good
scoring opportunity, but with the
Hill defence looking somewhat
disorganised, Mark McIntosh
miskicked from 12 yards. A mishit
clearance from Donnie Wilson caused
some consternation, but with Kevin
Montgomery stranded, the ball went
narrowly past for a corner. In the
thirteenth minute Maryhill went
ahead when Bryan Smith headed
powerfully into the net from a Mark
Sideserf cross. Sideserf then had a
shot of his own miss narrowly before
setting up the second goal. This
time his accurate cross was blasted
home by Sawyers for the first of his
five goals. Albion virtually
disappeared from the game at this
point as wave after wave of attacks
descended on their goal. Mark
Sideserf and Chris McKee both came
close with headed attempts, before
Sawyers wasted a good chance with a
weak header. Five minutes from the
break, however, the third goal
finally arrived. Bryan Smith
accepted a pass from Ross Barr, and
his cross into the penalty area was
slammed home from close range by
Chris McKee. In first half injury
time, the prospect of a trip to
Forfar next week became decidedly
unlikely when Sawyers grabbed his
second and Hill's fourth, shooting
home after good leading up work by
Chris McKee and Mark McManus.
A rare
attack from the visitors early in
the second half almost brought some
reward, but after a good run from
Scott Barrie, his shot came back off
the bar. Albion's main task from
then on appeared to be keeping the
score at a respectable level, but
their defence was finding it
increasingly difficult to cope with
the pace of the Maryhill attack. A
wonderful interpassing move
involving Mark Sideserf and James
McLernon ended with the latter
sweeping home an unsoppable shot
past Paul Findlay in the
Forfar goal. McLernon then got his
second and Maryhill's sixth with
another fine finish, after a superb
run from Sawyers had set him up.
Three minutes later Sawyers
completed his hat trick after
brilliantly making space for himself
inside the box, and giving Findlay
no chance with a high, close range
effort. An upfield surge from
Albion saw Mark McIntosh head
narrowly past, before James McLernon
had the chance to complete his hat
trick. Willie Sawyers was fouled
inside the penalty area by Stuart
Edgar, and generously allowed
McLernon to take the penalty.
Despite placing the ball well, his
attempt failed as Findlay made a
fine save. Maryhill finished the
game in style with a further two
goals from Sawyers in the final
minutes. First he headed in a
Sideserf corner, and then
intercepted a weak passback to score
his fifth and Maryhill's ninth.
