Maryhill  v. St Anthonys
1 - 3

3rd October 2009

Yet another lacklustre performance saw Maryhill sink to their sixth consecutive league defeat.

The visitors should have gone ahead in the sixth minute when slack defending allowed Thomas Miller a clear shot at goal, but he fired the ball past the post. Just on the quarter hour mark, a good run from Mark Sideserf ended with his well executed lob going just over the bar. Maryhill appeared to have taken the lead three minutes later when a wind assisted free kick from goalkeeper Chris Calder deceived Ants' keeper Anthony Curran, and ended up in the net. The jubilation was short lived, however, as referee Joseph Lawson indicated that, as it had been an indirect free kick, the goal was invalid. There were no further incidents worthy of mention in the first period, with the half time score being a fair reflection of the play.

Half Time  -  Maryhill  0   St Anthony's  0

After the break Maryhill pressed the Ants' defence, and sub Mark Maxwell was just inches away from from connecting with a cross from Brian Chiesa. Ross Barr then had an attempt at goal which was deflected by the Trialist striker on to the crossbar with the keeper beaten. Less than a minute later, the visitors opened the scoring. A cross from the left got caught up in the wind causing havoc in the Hill defence. Greg Harvey reacted quickly, and although Chris Calder managed to get a hand to the striker's header, he could not prevent the ball from crossing the line. Two minutes later, it was 2 - 0 with the wind again playing a major part. Mark McCuish took a free kick from just inside the Maryhill half, but Calder was deceived by the flight of the ball, and amazingly it ended up in the net. Yet another free kick produced the third goal, when substitute Ross Cumming's effort hit the target with Calder appearing to be slow to react. Leyton Slack scored for Maryhill in the last minute, but it was too late to be of any importance.

Although at least two of the goals could be attributed to goalkeeping errors, it would be unfair to blame Chris Calder for the defeat, as few of his colleagues performed well, with only Martin McGoldrick, John Cunningham and Mark Sideserf turning in passable displays.
