Perthshire  v. Maryhill
3 - 4
Central League Cup Round 2

4th  April 2009

A goal by Max Asante six minutes from the end ensured Maryhill's passage into the third round of the Central League Cup in yet another high scoring match. Maryhill opened strongly, and took the lead after five minutes. Max Asante's cross from the left was met by Willie Sawyers, who shot low into the net from six yards. A Mark McManus effort from 20 yards brought out a good save from Perthshire keeper Stephen Mather, as Maryhill dominated , looking likely to add to their lead. The game changed dramatically just after the half hour mark, however, when John Craig headed home the equaliser. The home side, clearly revitalised by this goal, put the Maryhill defence under pressure, and added another two goals in quick succession. Chris Barr was the marksman on both occasions, first firing home after Kevin Montgomery had blocked his first effort, then blasting in a strong shot from wide on the left. Maryhill were given some hope two minutes later when Willie Sawyers scored his second goal of the day, following another strong run and accurate cross from Asante.

Half Time - Perthshire 3  Maryhill 2

It took Maryhill less than a minute to draw level after the break, Sawyers this time setting up the goal with a low cross ftrom the left which was met at the far post by Bryan Smith. Sawyers appeared to have completed his hat trick nine minutes later, but referee Stephen Kane disallowed the goal for a foul on the keeper. Maryhill were pressing hard at this stage and Mather made a good stop from a McManus shot. Perthshire were by no means out of it, and Kevin Montgomery was forced into a good save from a Fraser Malcolm effort. Sawyers came close with another two attempts, then Shire's impressive John Craig had a good run and shot which just narrowly missed the target. The winning goal came came in the 84th minute when Max Asante outpaced the home defence before, shooting home from a tight angle. Maryhill should have made their victory more emphatic in the closing stages, but first Asante, then substitute James McLernon both passed up good opportunities to score.
In the end , this was a deserved victory for Maryhill, but they were made to fight all the way by a lively Perthshire side.
