Larkhall  v. Maryhill
0 - 2

4th May 2009

Goals from top scorers Willie Sawyers and James McLernon earned Maryhill a deserved three points, and took them  to second top position in the League.

Willie Sawyers had a couple of good efforts in the opening eight minutes which were just wide of the target, but he eventually hit the target on 28 minutes, when his well placed shot from just ouside the penalty area found the bottom corner of Stephen Soave's goal. The ex Hill keeper managed to get a hand to the ball, but could not prevent Sawyers getting his 36th goal of the season. Larkhall hit back, and a close range shot from another ex Maryhill player, Andy Forrester, flew over the bar. Maryhill, with the defence looking much more solid, held the upper hand until the break, but were unable to increase their lead.

 Half Time  -  Larkhall 0   Maryhill  1

Maryhill almost scored again right after half time when Sawyers set up Mark Sideserf, whose shot beat Soave, but struck the post. The home side replied with a powerful Craig Dewar header which Kevin Montgomery did well to hold. A minute later Maryhill increased their lead  when James McLernon's well struck free kick found the net via the post, and shortly after they were denied the chance to make it three, when Sawyers was barged off the ball by Dewar when running in on goal. Referee Gerry O'Neil, however, decided that the award of a penalty was not appropriate on this occasion. Substitute Alan McFadden had a great chance ten minutes from the end when he was sent clear, but his shot was saved by Soave. Despite a late flurry from Larkhall, Maryhill held on comfortably to secure victory.
