Ashfield  v. Maryhill
2 - 0

5th August 2009

Two goals from Darren O'Donnell were enough to give Ashfield the points in a match almost totally devoid of incident or excitement.

After seven minutes of relentless tedium, the home side took the lead in their first attack. A long ball eluded the Maryhill defence, and Darren O'Donnell lobbed the ball over Mark Wilson into the net. More dire then stuff ensued, with the only attempts at goal coming from Ashfield. A Mark Thompson free kick was well held by Wilson, then a good run by Alistair Martin ended with a weak shot which went wide. It took Maryhill 27 minutes to have a shot on goal, a free kick from Ross Barr which was well wide of the target.

Half Time  -  Ashfield 1  Maryhill 0

It did not seem possible that the second half could be less inspiring than the first. Sometimes, however, the impossible happens. The clouds thickened, it got a bit chillier, people ate chips and yawned, and the encircling birds seemed to be having a rare time. Almost incidentally, Ashfield got another goal, again scored by O'Donnell. It seemed as if the Maryhill defence had all gone for chips, such was the amount of time and space that the home striker was given to head home from a Thompson free kick. The game stuttered to its conclusion, with Ashfield probably deserving their win  by virtue of the fact that they were undeniably less awful than Maryhill. It is to be hoped that the start of the league programme might produce something of more substance for the supporters to enthuse over.
