Maryhill V Vale of Leven
0 - 2

6th March 2010

After the Scottish Cup escapades of recent weeks, it was back to League business for Maryhill. It was difficult to believe that this was the same team which had turned in high quality performances against top Super League teams Beith and Lochee, as a disjointed and inept performance saw them fail  to secure their first league victory.

The visitors took the initiative early on putting the Maryhill defence under pressure, and after seven minutes Alan Filshie passed up a good chance to open the scoring. He rose unchallenged , but his header from six yards flew over the bar. Three minutes later Maryhill came even closer when Andy Wright's header from a Michael Tolland cross struck the bar with Vale keeper Matthew Carr beaten. Vale looked the better side at this stage, and it was no real surprise when they opened the scoring in the seventeenth minute. Hesitancy in the Maryhill defence allowed Jack Buchanan to nip in and shoot past Kevin Montgomery from close range. Hill fought back, and only a superb save from Carr prevented Scott Banks from equalising. A late challenge from Mark Pawsey on Kevin Montgomery provoked anger from the Hill fans (and from Montgomery), but referee Derek Crothers considered that it did not merit a caution. Vale were then presented with a great opportunity to increase their lead when David McNaught broke free, but shot past the post. The same player was involved in his side's second goal ten minutes from the interval when he cut in from the left and shot for goal. The usually reliable Kevin Montgomery appeared to have saved comfortably, but allowed the ball to slip from his grasp. Jack Buchanan was again on hand to shoot home his own and his team's second goal.

Half Time - Maryhill  0   Vale of Leven  2

The second half was mainly devoid of any constructive football. Although they had the bulk of the play and several solid individual performances from Ryan Scobie, Mark Sideserf, John Cunningham and sub Leyton slack, Maryhill lacked cohesion, and never seriously threatened the Vale goal. The visitors seemed content to sit on their lead, and apart from a long range effort from Ryan Russell which hit the top of the crossbar, did not come close to increasing their lead. The only other incident of note was Pawsey's booking for another late challenge on Montgomery which appeared to be no worse than the one which went unpunished in the first half.

In the end there was little doubt that the better team won. This display from Maryhill was a huge disappointment, and a big improvement will be required if they are to avoid being relegated.
