Maryhill v.
Glencairn
3 - 3
7th May 2009
3 - 3
7th May 2009
Another five star display from
Willie Sawyers, scoring two and
setting up another, helped Maryhill
retain their unbeaten home league
record, in a hard fought and
entertaining game.
The visitors opened strongly and
took the lead after only two
minutes. Richie Burke's well struck
20 yard shot was saved by Kevin
Montgomery, but Paul McDougall was
on hand to blast home the rebound.
Glencairn were threatening to
overwhelm Maryhill at this stage,
playing some impressive football and
keeping the home side in their own
half for the first ten minutes. Hill
managed to weather the storm without
conceding any more goals, and a rare
sortie into the Glens' half saw
a Mark McManus long range shot come
close. This spurred them on , and
they began to put the Glencairn
defence under some pressure. Willie
Sawyers was at the heart of most of
the attacks, and he set up the
equaliser in the 18th minute. His
cross form the right was met first
time by James McLernon, giving Mark
Wilson in the visitors'goal little
chance. A fast end to end game was
developing, and Steven O'keane
brought out a good save from
Montgomery, before Maryhill took the
lead three minutes from the
interval.Sawyers worked his way in
from the right, and from the byline
shot high into the net for one of
his best goals of the season.
Half Time - Maryhill 2 Glencairn 1
It took the visitors less than a
minute to draw level after the
break, when Tony Fraser converted a
penalty after Mark Stanley was
deemed to have fouled Richie Burke
just inside the penalty area.Steven O' Keane
was perhaps fortunate to remain on
the field after appearing to aim a
head butt at Kevin O'Neil, but
referee Andrew Dallas did not have a
clear view of the incident, and the
outcome was yellow cards for both
players.O'Keane then came close
for Glencairn on two occasions,
first hitting the post ,
then shooting over from a few yards.
It was Maryhill, however, who
regained the lead with twenty
minutes remaining. Again it was
Sawyers on the mark, with his 38th
goal of the season , heading home a
Mark McManus free kick. Glencairn
showed why they had already secured
the league title, pinning Maryhill
back with a powerful display of
flowing football. Burke forced
Montgomery into a good save, before
O'Keane, who had certainly made his
mark on the game, got the equaliser
fifteen minutes from the end after a
great solo run into the penalty box.
It was thrilling end to end stuff
now, and a looping header from Mark
Sideserf beat Wilson in the Glens'
goal , but Chris Gentile headed the
ball off the line. Despite a few
close calls at both ends, a
thoroughly engrossing encounter
ended with a share of the points.
