Maryhill v.
Cambuslang
2 -2
10th October 2009
2 -2
10th October 2009
A
controversial
last
minute
goal
deprived
Maryhill
of their
first
League
win of
the
season
after a
keenly
contested
match at
Lochburn.
In the
end,
however,
a draw
was
probably
a fair
result.
Maryhill's
early
play
showed a
drive
and
purpose
which
had been
lacking
in the
last few
weeks,
and a
shot
from
Andrew
Wright
after
good
leading
up work
by Craig
Ferguson,
came
close.
The
visitors
were playing
some
good
football too, with
David
Matthews
and ex
Hill
player
Bryan
Smyth
impressing,
and after
seven
minutes,
they
took the
lead
when Thomas
Kilmartin's
fierce,
low
drive
from the
dege of
the
penalty
area
gave
Kevin
Montgomery
no
chance.
Mayhill
then
survived
a couple
of
Cambuslang
penalty
claims,
one
possibly
justified,
the
other
probably not.
It took
Hill
only
five
minutes
to draw
level,
however,
when
Craig
Ferguson
shot
home
from
twelve
yards,
after
Ryan
Scobie's
effort
had been
blocked
by
Cambuslang
keeper
John
Connolly.
The game
was
being
played
at a
high
pace,
and both
sides
had
opportunities
to take
the
lead. A
couple
of
headed
efforts
from
Kevin
Ogilvie
came
close
for the
visitors,
while
Maryhill
had a
Ryan
Scobie
header
which
just too
high,
and a
Mark
Sideserf
shot
which
struck
the bar.
Half
Time -
Maryhill

Cambuslang
1
Maryhill
started
the
second
period
at a
brisk
pace,
and were
unlucky
when a
shot
from
Paddy
Gallagher
beat
Connolly,
but came
back off
the
post.
They
then
appeared
to have
taken
the lead
when a
Leyton
Slack
corner
ended up
in the
net, but
the goal
was
disallowed,
presumably
for a
foul on
the
goalkeeper.
Cambuslang
also
continued
to
threaten
the Hill
goal,
and a
Smith
shot
flew
over the
bar,
then a
good try
from sub
Scott
Dunn
beat
Kevin
Montgomery,
but came
off the
crossbar. Montgomery,
playing
his
first
game of
the
season,
was in
top
form,
and
thwarted
several
Cambuslang
goal
scoring
opportunities.
Maryhill
went
ahead
for the
first
time
with
eight
minutes
remaining.
The
Trialist
striker,
who had
only
been on
the
field
for a
minute,
controlled
a Mark
Sideserf
corner,
and
scored
with an
overhead
kick.
Just as
it was
looking
as if
Hill
would
collect
their
first
three
points
of the
season,
Cambuslang
equalised
in the
final
minute.
A long
ball
through
the
centre
of the
Hill
defence
found
substitute
Alan
McCrae
unmarked.
He
hesitated,
possibly
expecting
an
offside
decision,
but when
this was
not
forthcoming
, headed
towards
goal and
slid the
ball
into the
net.
Terracing
opinion
was
divided on
the
offside
issue,
and
referee
Howard
Wilkin,
who was
well
behind
the
play,
gave the
visitors
the
benefit
of the
doubt.
It was a
cruel
blow for
Maryhill,
whose
performance
showed a
marked
improvement
on
previous
weeks,
but Cambuslang
will
feel
that
they did
enough
to take
something
from the
game.
