Vale of Leven  v. Maryhill
2 - 1

12th September 2009

Another disappointing performance, and another defeat leaves Maryhill firmly anchored at the foot of Division 1.

The opening fifteen minutes gave cause for cautious optimism, as Maryhill kept the home side largely pinned back in their own half. There seemed to be more fluency to their play, and they had several attempts on goal. Two efforts from Craig Ferguson came close, the first producing a good save from Matthew Carr in the Vale goal, and the second crashing off the underside of the bar with the keeper beaten. By way of contrast, it took Vale twenty six minutes to produce their first assault on the Maryhill goal, with Chris Calder making a  good stop  from a Vincent Berry shot. Apart from that, goalmouth incidents were few and far between, and the interval arrived with neither side able to find the net.

Half Time  -  Vale of Leven 0  Maryhill 0

Vale of Leven looked the likelier side to score throughout the second period, with Maryhill's early promise all but disappearing. Chris Calder made another outstanding save from a thundering 25 yard Kenny Wilson shot, before the breakthrough finally came with seventeen minutes remaining. Craig Cavana's looping header as he connected with a free kick, gave Calder little chance of preventing the home side from taking the lead, and only further impressive saves by the Hill keeper, from Alan Lees and Dougie Wilson efforts, kept Maryhill in the game. Nine minutes from the end they unexpectedly drew level when Craig Ferguson controlled an Andy Wright cross, and fired the ball past Carr form twelve yards. It took the home side only another three minutes, however, to regain their lead and claim the three points, when Alan Gourlay ran unchallenged and shot past Calder.
