Maryhill  v. Buckie Rovers
11-0

14th November 2009

Maryhill progressed to the third round of the Scottish Cup after a very one sided match at Lochburn.

Maryhill played some attractive football right from the start, and had several good opportunities in the opening twenty minutes. A combination of rash finishing, and some good saves from visiting keeper Steve Todd kept the scores level, until Ryan Scobie scored with a low shot in the 21st minute. Todd then blocked a Paddy Gallagher effort, before Craig Ferguson put Maryhill two up after 29 minutes with a well placed shot from a Scobie pass. This started a three goals in three minutes spell which ended the game as a contest. A strong Mark Sideserf cross from wide on the left was miskicked by Buckie defender Paul Robertson and ended up in the net, then Mark Maxwell got his first goal for Maryhill with a powerful shot from the edge of the penalty area. It was all one way traffic now, with the only surprise being that Maryhill failed to add to their score before the break. Good goalkeeping from Todd were the main reasons for this, with stops from Ryan Scobie and Paddy Gallagher particularly outstanding. Just before half time the visitors had a rare attempt on goal when a shot from Gordon Riddoch was just wide of the target.

Half Time - Maryhill  4   Buckie Rovers  0

The opening twenty minutes of the second period were fairly uneventful, and gave no hint of the seven goals in twenty minutes deluge which was soon to unfold. Paddy Gallagher finally opened his account for the season, holding off several challenges before firing  an accurate shot past Todd.Five minutes later Ryan Scobie got his second and Hill's sixth from the penalty spot after Paul Robertson had fouled Mark Stanley. Three close range efforts were then on target in quick succession from Mark Sideserf, sub Brian Chiesa and Paddy Gallagher before Gallagher completed his hat trick from a penalty to make it 10 -0. A minute later another sub, Leyton Slack, headed home a Craig Ferguson cross to make it 11 and complete the scoring.

There were many good displays from Maryhill players particularly Ryan Scobie and Paddy Gallagher, but man of the match was Craig Ferguson whose vision and distribution impressed throughout.Hopefully Maryhill can carry this form into their League programme in the coming weeks. It would be easy to play down this resounding victory by simply citing the poor quality of the opposition, but while this was undeniably the case, it should be pointed out that Dufftown, who are below Buckie in the league, eliminated Maybole, a Super League team, from the Scottish Cup.
