Maryhill  v. Shotts
0 -
2

15th August 2009

A disappointing performance saw Maryhill lose the opening match of their league campaign.

The visitors opened strongly, and went ahead after only three minutes. Paul McLaughlin beat several Maryhill defenders before sending a well placed shot past Mark Wilson. Despite this setback, the home side hit back and the trialist striker blasted over from close range. They forced a succession of corners, and four headed efforts from John Cunningham came close, three going wide and one striking the post. Ryan Scobie then  had a long range shot well held by Craig Brown in the Shotts goal, before the trialist stiker passed up a great opportunity to equalise for Hill. Craig Ferguson's inch perfect pass saw the striker beat the offside trap, but he finished weakly with only the keeper to beat. Shotts, who had always looked dangerous on the break ,got a second goal seven minutes from the interval when John Boyack shot home from close range, after a couple of attempts had been blocked. Maryhill were perhaps somewhat unfortunate to be behind at the break, but they failed to cash in on their outfield dominance, whereas the visitors took the chances that presented themselves.

Half Time - Maryhill 0  Shotts 2

The second half was pretty much a non event, almost devoid of incident. Maryhill did not create a single goal scoring opportunity, and for the visitors a disallowed "goal", and a William Russell shot which crashed off the underside of the bar were the only real incidents of note. Fourteen minutes from the end, a bad day for Maryhill got worse when Mark Stanley was sent off for an off the ball incident. The game then petered out, with the visitors probably deserving the three points.
