Thorniewood  v. Maryhill
2 - 3

16th May 2009

Maryhill kept their promotion hopes alive after a keenly contested and entertaining match at Robertson Park.

Maryhill started well in a match that they had to win, and after three minutes a Bryan Smith header beat keeper Kieran Muldoon, but was headed off the line by Stuart Little. They kept up the pressure, and Willie Sawyers shot narrowly past before opening the scoring after 20 minutes, outjumping the home defence to head home a well flighted free kick from James McLernon. Five minutes later it was 2 - 0, when Sawyers beat three defenders, then cut the ball back for Chris McKee to blast high into the net. The home side threatened occasionally with some neat football, but they lacked punch in front of goal. Their frustration was evident as their manager John Fallon was sent off by referee Scott Love just before half time for over vociferous protests at decisions that were not to his liking.

Thorniewood began the second half with much more purpose to their play , and within seven minutes they had drawn level. Four minutes into the half, the impressive Des Bradshaw shot home after his first attempt had been blocked by Kevin Montgomery, then Steven Mullen equalised from close range to give the home side the upper hand. Maryhill weathered the storm, and seven minutes later Max Asante seemed to have resored their lead, but the goal was disallowed. Chris McKee headed just past from a Sawyers cross before Maryhill got the winner on 66 minutes. Paul Stevenson handled a netbound shot on the goal line, and Willie Sawyers dispatched the penalty kick for his 41st goal of the season, after Stevenson had been shown a red card. Sawyers was sent clear 14 minutes from the end, but Muldoon made a good save. Thorniewood kept up the fight and Montgomery saved well from Mullen, then two headed efforts in the space of a minute from Mark Daly both came close. In the final minute Willie Sawyers again had the chance to seal it and complete his hat trick, but again Muldoon made a good block to keep the tension going until the final whistle.
