Maryhill  v. Rutherglen Glencairn
West of Scotland Cup
1 - 4

17th October 2009

A comfortable and well merited victory saw Rutherglen progress to the next round of the West of Scotland Cup against a very poor Maryhill team.

After a fairly even and uneventful opening period, the visitors went ahead in the 14th minute, when Stephen O'Keane's well placed 20 yard shot gave Kevin Montgomery little chance. Montgomery then saved well from a Burke header, before Maryhill's first attempt on goal arrived on 23 minutes. Craig Ferguson made space for himself before firing a shot from the edge of the penalty area. It looked a certain goal, but Steven McNeil in the Glens' goal made a brilliant diving save. The keeper was to impress for the rest of the match with his confident handling and command of his area. Despite Maryhill's lack of threat near goal, they seemed likely to keep the deficit to one goal until the break. Two goals in four minutes  changed all that, however, and effectively finished the game as a contest. There was an alarming simplicity to both of the goals, but they  highlighted the difference in quality between the teams. Richie Burke fired home from just inside the box when there appeared to be little danger, then ex Hill player Paul Thomson scored the second after connecting with a cross from the right.

Half Time - Maryhill 0  Rutherglen  3

The second half was a non event, with Maryhill totally devoid of any attacking ideas, and the visitors apparently content to sit on their lead. Hill did manage to score in the 69th minute, when a rare moment of indecision in the Glencairn defence allowed Ryan Scobie to fire home from  a Leyton Slack free kick. Despite a brief flurry of activity, Maryhill failed to gain any impetus from this, and Thomson added a fourth goal for the visitors, shooting home from a few yards after being left completely unmarked.

This result emphasised just how far Maryhill have fallen in recent times, and how far they have to go to regain their status as one of the top sides in the West Region. Only a few years ago they would have harboured realistic expectations of winning a competition such as this, but  a tame exit at the first stage now seems to be the order of the day.
