Maryhill V St Anthony's
3 - 3

18th April 2009

Defensive weaknesses were once again the problem for Maryhill as they dropped another two vital points in their quest for promotion to the Super League.

They got off to a good start when Bryan Smith blasted the ball high into the net in the seventh minute, after Willie Sawyers' effort had been blocked by the visitors' keeper David Turner. The lead only lasted a further thirteen minutes, however, when St Anthony equalised in controversial circumstances. Ross Cummings appeared to be well offside when he shot home from close range, but Referee Mark Ainslie who was not in a good position to judge, allowed the goal to stand. This incident really highlighted the problems which referees have to encounter at this level, with no assistants available. Several Maryhill players protested , and Bryan Smith was shown a yellow card. To their credit, Maryhill did not allow this to deter them, and they regained their lead just five minutes later. Willie Sawyers cleverly made space for himself inside the penalty area, but just as he was about to shoot , he was brought down by Graham Jaap. Jaap was booked before Sawyers did his usual efficient job from the spot for his 28th goal of the season. Maryhill remained on top until the interval, but  were unable to increase their advantage.

Half  Time -  Maryhill 2  St Anthony  1

Bryan Smith just failed to connect with a Max Asante cross as Maryhill started the second period in determined fashion, but they quickly faded as the visitors began to assert themselves. Liam McIlhatton had a good opportunity, but Kevin Montgomery blocked his shot well. They did get a deserved equaliser in the 64th minute, when Paul Deanie scored following the all too familiar turmoil in the Hill defence. It came as no real surprise when full back Craig Murphy put the visitors ahead for the first time with sixteen minutes remaining. Just a minute later Ronnie McDonald had a great chance to seal the game but he miss kicked only a few yards from goal. Maryhill appeared to be heading for their first home league defeat of the season , but they drew level in the 78th minute. James McLernon, who had been very effective after coming on as a sub for Max Asante, crossed from the left, and Bryan Smith headed into the net. In the final minute, Hill could have snatched an unlikely winner, but following another McLernon cross, Chris McKee headed over from six yards.
