Maryhill  v. Yoker
1 - 1

18th October 2008

A hard earned point took Maryhill to the top of the league on goal difference in a match which ended in chaotic scenes with 2 red and 4 yellow cards issued in injury time. The tone of the game was set early on when referee Howard Wilkin's over lenient approach to dissent from Scott Cameron of Yoker and Charlie Hobbs of Maryhill perhaps sowed the seeds for the disorder which was to erupt later. Despite lengthy warnings to both players, Cameron's reckless over the ball challenge on Mark Stanley merited only another warning, and further dissent from Hobbs was treated in the same manner.

Maryhill dominated the early stages, with  Hobbs missing two good opportunities, and James McLernon hitting the post with a well struck free kick. Yoker then took the lead somewhat against the run of play after 25 minutes, but it has to be said that the goal was one of the best seen at Lochburn for some time. There did not appear to be any imminent danger when Martin Gallagher gained possession some 30 yards from goal, but he hit an unstoppable shot which gave Kevin Montgomery little chance despite his valiant attempts to stop the ball. The visitors  gained the upper hand for a spell and the experienced David Kirkwood missed two good chances, before hitting a 20 yard effort which skimmed the bar.

Maryhill looked to have equalised five minutes after the break, but Donnie Wilson's close range header crashed off the underside of the crossbar and was scrambled clear by the Yoker defence. Four minutes later a shot from Kirkwood beat Montgomery, but the goal was disallowed for offside. Maryhill were having  the bulk of possession at this stage, but this was hardly surprising as the visitors' tactics saw them employing virtually a 7 - 2 -1 formation for most of the half. They looked dangerous on the break, however, and should have sealed the game fourteen minutes from the end, but John Paul Grant somehow managed to miss an open goal from only a few yards out. Five minutes later Maryhill's pressure finally paid off, when Charlie Hobbs swept the ball home from Alistair Murray's cross from the right. The same player then had a chance to put Hill ahead, but after making space for himself with a good run down the left, he shot hastily over. The visitors were not out of it, and Grant missed another golden opportunity shooting way too high from around ten yards, and in the last minute a powerful shot from sub Jamie Carson brought out a great save from Kevin Montgomery. As Maryhill made one final surge forward in search of the winner, the game lurched out of control when a good old "rammy" ensued inside the Yoker penalty box. When the dust had settled, Scott Cameron of Yoker and Alistair Murray of Maryhill were sent off, and Charlie Hobbs was booked. Back with the football, a draw was probably a fair result in the end.
