Glencairn  V   Maryhill
1 - 0
20th  December 2008

A  disputed goal just before half time was enough to give Glencairn three points in this top of the table clash at New Southcroft Park.

Straight from the kick off Glencairn looked the hungrier of the two sides. They were winning almost every 50 / 50 ball, and had more cohesion to their play than a strangely lethargic looking Maryhill team. The Hill defence struggled to cope with the pace of McArdle and Burke in particular, but fortunately the home side's final ball and finishing did not match the quality of their outfield play. David Dickson had two long range efforts, but both were wide of the target. David Carr also had two good opportunities, but the first flew past the post, and on the second occasion a great block by Andrew Wright prevented an almost certain goal. Maryhill just could not find any fluency, and it was difficult to believe that this was almost the same side that had put on such a great, battling performance against Sunnybank only a week ago. Three minutes from the break Glens went ahead in somewhat controversial circumstances. Jamie Prunty connected with a free kick , but his effort was scrambled clear by Ross Barr. Referee Scott Love, however, decided that he ball had crossed the line and awarded a goal, despite the prolonged protests of the Maryhill defence. The first half ended on further controversy when Glencairn were reduced to ten men. David Carr was given a straight red card for a late and dangerous challenge on Donnie Wilson. Carr clearly did not agree with the decision, and appeared to be given a second red card by Mr Love for his continued protests and gestures.

Any hopes on the part of the Maryhill support that the extra man might give them a boost in the second half were hastily dispelled as Glencairn continued to be the better side.  Only some desperate defending and a couple of instinctive blocks from Kevin Montgomery prevented them from increasing their lead. The best chance fell to Ryan McArdle just on the hour when, although appearing to be in an offside position, was allowed to run clear, but blasted his shot off the crossbar.  A late flurry of activity from Maryhill in the last five minutes might have seen them salvage a point. In truth, however, it would not have been deserved, as Glencairn always appeared to hold the advantage over a Maryhill team which produced one of their most disappointing displays of the season so far.
