Maryhill  v. Larkhall
1 - 1

21st February 2009

After two successive nine goal thrillers, it was back to more mundane fare here. Both sides struggled to find any fluency in a dull and turgid match, with  a draw being a fair reflection of the play.

The visitors, with five ex Maryhill players in their starting line up had the better of the opening period, and Kevin Montgomery had to make several impressive saves.Brian Watret headed over after only three minutes, then Andy Dorrans squandered a good chance , shooting weakly past from 12 yards. Hill's first threat came after 26 minutes when James McLernon picked up a pass from Bryan Smith, but Stephen Soave in The Larkhall goal managed to block his shot. Chris McKee then fired the rebound over the bar. It was all prettty grim stuff, however, apart from some extremely "robust" tackling. Referee Burns was in lenient mood, though, booking only Maryhill's Mark Sideserf and Larkhall's David Crilly in the first half. The only goal of the first period came amid some controversy in the 33rd minute. James McLernon was fouled by Robert Graham, and a penalty kick was awarded. The Thistle players protested vociferously that the offence had taken place outside the penalty area. Surprisingly no one was booked, before Willie Sawyers blasted the ball home to give Hill a 1-0 lead. Andy Forrester and Leon Kondol both brought out good saves from Montgomery, but Hill held their lead until the break.

If the first half had been somewhat uninspiring, the second was even worse. A series of wild tackles went unpunished, passes continually went astray, and Larkhall equalised when their best player Robert Coulter, with no Maryhill player in sight, headed past Montgomery. Maryhill had a strong penalty claim when James McLernon appeared to be tripped when in the act of shooting inside the box, bur Mr Burns clearly did want to incur the wrath of the Larkhall players again, and turned down the claim. Brian Watret forced another  great save from Kevin Montgomery, then substitute Alan McFadden had a great chance to win the game for Maryhill three minutes from the end , but he blasted over from a couple of yards out.
