A superb goalkeeping display from
Kevin Montgomery, and some atrocious
finishing by the home side were the
main reasons for Maryhill
leaving Millburn Park with a vital,
but somewhat fortunate three points.
Vale started brightly and after only
five minutes Kevin Montgomery had to
make two good stops in quick
succession to thwart Alan Lees. The
Maryhill defence appeared to be non
existent at times, as the home side
strode through at will, and it came
as no surprise when they took the
lead two minutes later. Mark Pawsey,
who had scored twice against
Maryhill at Lochburn, was again on
target with a close range header.
Their lead lasted barely a minute,
however, when Mark McManus equalised
with a low, left foot shot from 25
yards. It was the home side who
dominated until the break, as
Maryhill's defence struggled to cope
with the strong wind and the pace of
the Vale attack. A David McNaught
free kick struck the crossbar, then
Pawsey passed up two great chances
to put his side in front again.
Maryhill's only effort of note was a
Bryan Smith 20 yard free kick which
was well held by Matt Carr in the
home goal.

Maryhill went ahead in the first
minute of the second half. The wind
held up a cross from from Mark
Sideserf, causing indecision in the
home defence. Despite Carr's shout
that he had the ball covered ,
Andrew Wright out jumped him to head
home his first goal for Maryhill.
The home side then created chance
after chance in their search for the
equaliser, but hurried finishing and
great saves from Montgomery, in
particular from attempts by Wilson,
Pawsey and Martin, ensured that
Maryhill took all three points.
Indeed, they almost snatched a third
ten minutes from the end when a
Willie Sawyers header struck the
post with Carr beaten, and Alan
McFadden's shot from the rebound
was cleared off the line.
