Maryhill V Johnstone Burgh
3 - 1

22nd April 2009

A hat trick by Willie Sawyers earned Maryhill a vital three points, although they were perhaps a little fortunate with two of the goals coming from hotly disputed penalty kicks.

The visitors had a strong penalty claim refused by referee Alan Newlands in the seventh minute when Rutherford appeared to be fouled by Donnie Wilson. The visitors were the more lively side, and took a deserved lead after 22 minutes. A high cross from the right eluded the Maryhill defence , leaving Craig Marr the simple job of tapping in at the far post. Burgh should have increased their lead as they dictated play at this stage, and efforts from Rutherford and Harvey produced good saves from Kevin Montgomery. Marr and Adam also came very close, but against the run of play, Maryhill drew level after 34 minutes. Willie Sawyers was left unmarked as he headed home from a Mark McManus corner to make it 1 - 1. Sawyers then set up Bryan Smith , but his 20 yard shot was just wide of the target, as Maryhill finished the half the stronger side.

Half Time - Maryhill  1  Johnstone 1

Four minutes after the break  Maryhill were awarded a penalty for a foul on Chris McKee as he shot for goal. Willie Sawyers scored to put Hill 2- 1 ahead. Nine minutes later McKee headed narrowly over, then Craig Marr came close to scoring his second goal of the evening for Johnstone. Maryhill sealed the points midway through the half from a  second Sawyers penalty , awarded  when Cuddihy was adjudged to have fouled Sawyers. The Johnstone players and support felt aggrieved at the award, and unsurprisingly heads went down, allowing Maryhill to take control of the game until the end. Only several good saves from keeper Fraser Wilson prevented them from adding to their lead.
