Port Glasgow  v. Maryhill
3 -
0

22nd August 2009

One of the poorest performances from a Maryhill side for a considerable time, saw them go down tamely to Port Glasgow, courtesy of a hat trick from Kevin Struthers.

The visitors took only fifteen minutes to go ahead when slackness in the Hill defence allowed  Struthers to pick up a through ball and place it behind Mark Wilson. Three minutes later the striker got his and his teams' second when he tapped home after a Jonathan Donnelly shot had rebounded from the crossbar. Maryhill were totally disorganised , and any brief forays into their opponents' half were easily dealt with by the Port defence. The home side should have increased their lead when more woeful defending allowed Scott Nugent to run clear, but he delayed his shot just long enough to let Martin McGoldrick, one of the few Maryhill players to earn pass marks, avert the danger with a great sliding tackle. Nugent had another effort from 20 yards which was just wide, and it took Hill until the 44th minute to have their first goal attempt, a shot from Andrew Wright which was well saved by Sean Graham in the Port goal.

Half Time - Port Glasgow  2  Maryhill 0

The half time comments from some of the Maryhill faithful that it couldn't get any worse proved to be unfounded, with the only surprise being that Port Glasgow managed to add just one more goal. Nugent passed up two easy chances, one hitting the bar, another saved by Mark Wilson, and Struthers had several attempts to complete his hat trick thwarted. The lack of a recognised striker in the Maryhill team was to prove significant, as they failed abysmally to pose any threat whatsoever to the Port goal. Struthers eventually completed his hat trick well into injury time with a potential goal of the season direct from a free kick to make it 3 -0. They will rarely collect an easier three points.
