Johnstone Burgh  v. Maryhill
2 - 2

22nd  November 2008

A Willie Sawyers goal seven minutes from the end earned Maryhill a deserved share of the points after a fairly drab and uninspring encounter at Keanie Park.

Ex Maryhill favourite John Sherry obviously didn't fancy facing his old team, as he managed to get himself injured in the warm up and was replaced by Colin Smith. To cause further confusion Smith himself was then replaced by Gordon Chalmers midway through the second half. Maryhill, with new signing Alan McFadden on from the start, had the better of the opening exchanges and took a merited lead after 24 minutes. McFadden's cross was fumbled by Burgh keeper Alan Donohoe, leaving Chris McKee the simple task of heading the ball into the net. Hill looked likely to add to their lead at this stage, but the home side got back into the game when their best player Craig McGlone scored from the penalty spot just seven minutes later. Inspired by this, Burgh put the Maryhill defence under some pressure, and Paul Murphy forced Kevin Montgomery into making a good save from his close range effort. Johnstone had a claim for another penalty turned down, before Maryhill finished the half strongly when Willie Sawyers rather hasty shot from an Alan McFadden cross sailed over the bar.

Burgh dominated the opening part of the second half, and took the lead when a low shot from Murphy struck the inside of the post and trickled over the line. McGlone then set up David Brolly with a good opportunity, but his headed attempt was too high. Maryhill  began to re assert themselves, but the usually reliable Sawyers missed two good opportunities. Chris McKee made Hill's task more difficult when he was red carded for a rash challenge on Murphy, but surprisingly they raised their game and drew level with seven minutes remaining. Alan McFadden's  shot was blocked, but Sawyers pounced on the rebound to fire the ball home. The Burgh defence was under siege until the final whistle, but despite several close calls, Maryhill just couldn't find the winner.
