Forth V
Maryhill

3 - 4
23rd January 2010
After six postponements, this
replay eventually went ahead,
with Maryhill progressing to the
fourth round of the Scottish Cup
after a dramatic penalty shoot
out. There should have been no
need for such a spectacle,
however, as Maryhill were well
on top throughout, missing
several good scoring
opportunities.
Maryhill opened strongly and a
Mark Sideserf shot in the first
minute was only inches away from
giving them the lead. Good work
from Craig Ferguson then set up
Ryan Scobie, but his well placed
shot brought out the first of
many fine saves from
Stefan McCurley in the Forth
goal. Ferguson's effort from the
rebound whistled narrowly past.
It was mainly one way traffic at
this stage, and further goal
attempts from Mark Maxwell and
Ross Barr came very close.
Forth's first shot at goal
arrived on 23 minutes when
Gordon Grant's low shot from
just outside the penalty area
was wide of Kevin Montgomery's
left hand post. Maryhill
maintained the upper hand until
the break, but the only goal
effort of note was a long range
effort from Mark Maxwell which
sailed over the bar.
Half
Time - Forth 0 Maryhill 0
The
second half continued in a
similar vein with Maryhill
dominating, but failing to
convert their outfield
superiority into goals. McCurley
made two great stops in quick
succession from shots by Ryan
Scobie, then Mark Maxwell was
sent clear, but again good
positioning by the Forth keeper
saw him block the Hill striker's
effort. The breakthrough finally
came seventeen minutes into the
half. A corner from the left was
not properly cleared by the
Forth defence, and following a
goalmouth melee,Ryan Scobie rose
to head the ball into the net.
Only a minute later, however,
the home side were given an
opportunity to equalise. A
fairly soft, but probably
technically correct penalty was
awarded after Martin McGoldrick
and Gordon Grant clashed in the
penalty area. Fortunately for
Maryhill, Niall Reynolds'
attempt from the spot was well
wide of the target. The second
decisive goal continued to elude
Maryhill. Ryan Scobie was sent
clear, but overran the ball at
the vital moment. A Mark
Sideserf corner was headed just
over by John Cunningham, then
Mark Maxwell seemed certain to
score, but was thwarted by
another good save from McCurley.
Craig Ferguson was just inches
away from connecting with a
Scobie cross, before a low 20
yard drive from Ross Barr was
well saved by the home keeper.
Just as is it was looking like
one goal would be enough to see
Maryhill into a fourth round tie
with Beith, Forth were awarded a
second penalty by referee Steven
McFaulds ten minutes from the
end. This time there was no
doubt about the validity of the
decision, and John Cunningham
was perhaps fortunate to be
shown only a yellow card as he
pulled back Alan Cameron inside
the box. Kevin Montgomery saved
Cameron's spot kick, but he
eventually managed to put the
ball into the net after the
Maryhill defence failed to
clear. Neither side proved
capable of finding a winner, and
the penalty decider ensued.
Ryan
Scobie and Mark Maxwell were on
target for Maryhill, as were
Stuart McGhee and Gordon Murphy
for Forth. The first miss came
when Craig Ferguson's effort
came back off the crossbar. The
home side's advantage was
quickly nullified, however, when
sub Brian McCloy struck the post
with his shot. Stefan McCurley
saved from Martin McGoldrick
before the home side again
gained the upper hand with David
Grant's shot finding the net.
Michael Tolland confidently
fired home for Hill, leaving
Danny Smith the task of
clinching Forth's passage into
the next round. His strong shot
rebounded from the bar, letting
Maryhill off the hook once
again. Mark Sideserf
then scored, before Alan
Cameron missed his second
penalty of the day, his shot
coming back off the post, to
ensure victory for Maryhill.
