Maryhill  v. Ashfield
1 - 3

23rd May 2009

The second half was a complete contrast to the evenly contested first 45 minutes. A strangely lethargic looking Maryhill side simply faded out of the game as Ashfield dominated from start to finish. Hill's defensive frailties were once again exposed, and they simply had no answer to the pace of Alistair Martin and Craig Smith in particular. Wave after wave of attacks from the visitors brought out a series of impressive saves from Maryhill keeper Kevin Montgomery, but for all their dominance, it looked as if Ashfield were not going to be able to turn their outfield advantage into goals. It took a penalty kick midway through the half to finally give them the breakthrough. Donnie Wilson impeded Craig Smith in the act of shooting a few yards from goal, and a penalty and red card for Wilson was the inevitable outcome. From the moment that Jim Smith banged in the penalty to make it 2 -1 , there was only going to be one winner in this game. The extra man allowed Ashfield to dominate to an even greater extent, with the only surprise being that they were able to add just one more goal, a header from Craig Smith 11 minutes from the end. A late burst from Maryhill failed to produce any goals, and they finished the game a well beaten team.

Footnote for trivia buffs -  the goals were scored by three different players, all called Smith!
