Maryhill V Cumbernauld
0 - 0

25th April 2009

Poor finishing, inspired goalkeeping, and having to play most of the match without top scorer Willie Sawyers, were the main reasons for Maryhill failing to collect all three points.

The first half was a fairly uninspiring affair, with the visitors playing some neat football, and having the upper hand in terms of possession, but without creating any real chances of note. Max Asante was sent clear in the eighth minute, but his shot was blocked by Cumbernauld keeper David Buchanan. Chris McKee latched onto the rebound, but his hurried shot trundled past the post. Willie Sawyers had to retire injured  after only ten minutes, and was replaced by Alan McFadden. The only other incident worthy of  mention was a curling  McFadden shot which beat Buchanan, but just skimmed the post.

The second half was fairly even, but Maryhill had by far the better chances. McFadden was twice clean through, but good stops by Buchanan prevented him from scoring. Max Asante suffered a similar fate as Buchanan denied him on two occasions when a goal looked likely to ensue. For the visitors, a 40 yard wind assisted Alan Templeton free kick looked netbound, but Kevin Montgomery made a great save. Maryhill suffered another setback with twenty minutes remaining when Max Asante was injured, leaving them with only one striker on the field.  Mark Sideserf  came very close with a header from a Bryan Smith corner, then Cumbernauld's Gary McClymont brought out another quality stop from Montgomery. In the final minute a left foot shot from Mark McManus struck the post, then three minutes into injury time a 25 yard effort from Templeton was touched round the post by Montgomery to ensure that the game finished goalless.
