Lochee United V Maryhill
2 - 1

27th February 2010

Maryhill's surprisingly lengthy Scottish Cup adventure eventually came to an end at Thomson Park Lochee. Despite their lowly League status, they were in no way disgraced against their more illustrious opponents, but despite a spirited performance, there was no doubt that the better team won in the end.

The home side had a half hearted penalty claim dismissed in the second minute when Phil Hagan made a meal of a challenge from Mark Sideserf. Edinburgh referee Neil McLennan was obviously determined to make his mark, and booked Scott Banks and Mark Stanley in the opening twelve minutes for challenges which merited a warning at most. Lochee, as expected, had the bulk of the play but found the Maryhill defence, with Martin McGoldrick, John Cunningham and Mark Sideserf outstanding, very difficult to break down. When they did manage to find a way through , they came up against inspired goalkeeping from Kevin Montgomery. His stop from Lochee's impressive Craig Robertson in the ninth minute was particularly outstanding. Maryhill attacks were few and far between, but a Mark Maxwell free kick and a Craig Ferguson shot did cause some concern for the Lochee defence. Despite almost constant pressure from the home side, the Hill defence held out comfortably until the break.

Half Time - Lochee United  0   Maryhill  0

Both teams looked livelier after the interval, with Craig Ferguson back to form for Maryhill after a lethargic first half. Lochee also stepped up a gear, and an enthralling game now began to unfold. The opening goal came after seven minutes when Craig Robertson fired home from ten yards. Any thoughts that the game was won were quickly dispelled when Maryhill equalised a minute later. Ryan Scobie's cross from wide on the left deceived home keeper Iain Ross and landed in the net. Craig Ferguson almost put Hill ahead but his low shot was blocked on the line with the keeper beaten. Lochee continued to dominate, and in spite of some solid defending from Maryhill, gradually began to find the way to goal. Several excellent stops from Kevin Montgomery, in particular from Paul Blackwood and Phil Hagan, kept Maryhill level, but he was eventually beaten twenty minutes from the end. Again it was Robertson who was on target when he broke through and fired a powerful shot low into the net from around twenty yards to take his team into the Quarter Finals.
