St. Anthonys   v. Maryhill
5 - 3

28th February 2009

Maryhill's promotion aspirations received a significant setback, as a poor display, especially in defence, saw them go down to a lively St Anthony's side in another high scoring match.

Opening exchanges were even and fairly uneventful before Maryhill took the lead in the fourteenth minute. Ants' keeper David Turner did not deal well with a Mark Sideserf corner, punching the ball on to the crossbar. Willie Sawyers was on hand to out jump the home defence and head home the rebound from six yards. The lead only lasted three minutes, when the home side scored with an overhead kick from Danny Taylor. Taylor then got his and his side's second on 34 minutes. His lobbed shot from 25 yards appeared to have been covered by Kevin Montgomery, but he only managed to push the ball into the roof of the net. From then until the break the home side were in control, and did not look like a team that had only won two league games.

                                                                 Half Time -  St Anthony's  2       Maryhill  1

The second half started with Alan McFadden on in place of James McLernon, and following sustained pressure, the striker eventually got his first goal for Maryhill. A Mark McManus corner was flicked on by Sawyers into his path and his close range shot beat Turner  to make the score 2 - 2. Only sixty seconds later, however, the home side were back in front. A harmless looking cross from Danny Taylor was fumbled by Montgomery , and Gary Madden had an easy job to put the ball into the net. Seven minutes later Taylor completed his hat trick with a header, and following further  poor defending from Maryhill, Craig Murphy made it 5 -2 with thirteen minutes remaining. Willie Sawyers gave Hill a glimmer of hope when he took advantage of slackness in the home defence seven minutes form the end, but really Maryhill's woeful display was not worthy of any reward. In the final minute St Anthony's defender Mansare was sent off for time wasting, having already been yellow carded in the first half.
