Maryhill were knocked out of the
League Cup on penalties after an
even, but uninspiring game.
The visitors started at a furious
pace, and Maryhill found it
difficult to get out of their own
half. Despite this, and the fact
that they played some neat football,
East Kilbride created few clear cut
chances, apart from a couple of
headers from Steven Watson. In fact,
it was Maryhill who went ahead after
19 minutes when Alan McFadden,
perhaps the smallest man on the
park, was given loads of space to
head home from an accurate James
McLernon cross from the left. The
equaliser came thirteen minutes
later when Ross Ballantyne cut in
from the left and fired in a low 25
yard shot which beat Kevin
Montgomery. The visitors had the
upper hand again, and Ballantyne
tried an almost identical effort,
but this time Montgomery was quicker
off the mark and pushed the ball
past the post. 3 minutes from the
break Maryhill regained the lead
when Chris McKee was sent clear by
McLernon, and calmly placed the ball
low past Brian McDonald in the
visitors' goal.

East Kilbride dominated the second
half, again without seriously
threatening the Maryhill defence,
but Ryan Kelly eventually got a
deserved equaliser fourteen minutes
from the end with a close range shot
to trigger a penalty shoot out.
Kevin O'Neil and Willie Sawyers were
successful for Maryhill, but
McDonald saved from Mark Sideserf,
Chris McKee and Donnie Wilson. For
East Kilbride Ross Ballantyne and
Graeme McGhee were the only sinners,
with David Feeney, Steven McClung
and Billy Struthers all scoring to
take their team into the Quarter
Final.
